A Signature for your Persona - A Brief Overview
of Orthography for 1200-1600

Margaret

Was the 'person' in your persona able to write? What sorts of documents, public and private, might they have needed a signature for? Did they instead use a mark or monogram? What did handwriting look like for your era?

This class will briefly cover literacy, public & private documents, the language used in such documents and what & where a signature would have been needed or used. The bulk of the class will then cover actual handwriting alphabets (not just the decorative styles seen in manuscripts), stylistic shifts between the eras and  the quirks that personalized handwriting (then, as now) such as ligatures between letters, abbreviations, flourishes, etc. - this will be illustrated by depictions of actual signatures throughout the eras covered. Due to time constraints, this class will only be concerned with Western style alphabets from roughly 1200 to 1600.

A handout covering the topic, with complete bibliography and representative alphabets for the various time periods will be available for $1 (to cover copy costs). If there is time, numeracy (what written numbers your persona would have used & the counting methods) and also the Latinization of personal names & locatives for signatures & seals. If those planning on attending the class are interested, they may send their persona's name, era, locale, job, & education level etc. via email to the instructor before July 15 to receive during the class a suggested version of a persona signature based on the themes being taught.

Please bring lined paper and a calligraphy pen.
